The opening credits starts with the institution of the film which is 'DreamWorks Pictures presents'. This tells us that the film is going to be of high quality as DreamWorks is quite a big institution and therefore can afford more high tech equipment. This is clear black writing with a panelling effect which connotes the city and built up areas. We also get connotations of night as the first background is a dark blue with start effect. The non-diegetic music is rather mysterious and this connotes the genre of the film to be maybe a crime or action. A man in a suit then appears on in the opening titles, this tells us that he is a main character as he is wearing a suit and this connotes dominance and as he is he first character this also connotes to us that he is the main character.
After this the title changes to 'A Kemp Company and Splendid Pictures Production'. These are more institutions of the film. This title has the same writing as the last logo and is placed on a screen with planes on it. This connotes to us that an airport will appear In the film and this gives the audience an idea of the storyline but not to much so it will make the audience want to watch the rest of the film. We also see multiple new characters appear, who are dressed as pilots which again tells us that an airport will appear in the film.
The first appearance of an actors name is 'Leonardo DiCaprio', there is an arrow next to the title that points down to our main character. This tell us the actor so we know who the main character is.
Our main character then goes being a line and appears the other side as a Pilot, this tells us that he changes into a different role in the film and he changes his identity. We then get shot of another character with another arrow pointing down on him and 'Tom Hanks' title next to the character. This tell us that he is also a main character, we also see that he is wearing glasses and a hat which connotes to us that he is possibly the antagonist and trying to stay hidden. We then see a shot of the Tom Hanks character following the Leonardo DiCaprio character connoting a spy or issues to occur for our first character.
After this we see the main title of the film 'Catch me if you can', this connotes to us there may be a chase or someone running for something in the film which we have already seen in the opening. We then see an establishing shot of a road with cars on it, we see a yellow cab which connotes to us New York and we therefore see a location of the film appear. The yellow cab stands out to the audience as it is not the same as the other cars. We see the Yellow cab make a turn which leaves tyre marks this connotes to us that the cab is moving with some speed. We then see a blue car following the same path as the yellow cab. The blue car stands out o the audience as it is also of a brighter colour, the blue car makes the same turning and leaves tyre marks also showing the speed it is moving in, this could show us that there may be a car chase in the film at some point.
We then see our main character transform from a pilot into a ordinary man. He then dives into a pool and we see a setting which looks like cruise ship which could tell us that there may be an occurrence of a cruise ship and a relaxed holiday area at some point. Our second main character appears who we believe to be following our first character. Our first character then changes into a doctor which could show another identity he changes into in order to escape from our second character.
We follow our first character into a hospital where we see him go into a lift with a nurse connoting an occurrence of romance and women in the film. In a separate shot we see our second character in a dim lighting walking up the stairs showing that he is still following our first character, and possibly that he is catching up with him. Our first character then changes into an office worker, showing another change in identity. We then see two women sat at desks obviously in a office setting but they are using type writers. This connotes to us the time range that the film is set in as typewriters were being used. We see another chase with the first and second character until our first character changes identity again into a butler. We see our first character go underground into what looks like a sewer or a lair. This could connote a criminal to the audience. Our first character then changes identity again into a officer and It shows a night-time scene and shows the second character get very close to the first character but does not show him getting caught. The opening of the film then ends.
The film opening shows a main aspects of the film using drawings. It does not show any real images but still give us some idea of the basis of the film. This will entice the audience as we have to watch the film to find out what happened to the main character.
