There is then a sharp cut to a black screen with more titles on. The names of the people mentioned in the titles are not in the same font as the rest and is in a font that looks like handwriting. This could show that people have a lot to do with this film and the written names almost give off ideas of stalkers,
We then have a jump cut to a mid shot of hands drawn on some paper, the surrounding light is low key and the hands are veiny and wrinkly which could again connote a spooky and mysterious environment. The audience can also hear some diegetic creaking noises and then there are multiple quick jump cuts of different items that are rather mysterious and hard to make out. Then we see out first character title 'Brad Pitt' this could show that the film is not for a niche audience as institutions that don't have a lot of money and aim there films more at niche audience would not be able to afford actors like Brad Pitt. The black screen with this title on crackles like a tv screen with electrical issues which adds mystery to the film.
We then see quite manly hands scraping his fingerprints off, this connotes crime and that the character does not want to be knows and may be doing something illegal. Throughout this the music is slow yet creepy and the use of low key lighting makes this rather spooky. We then see the main title, 'SE7EN' this is in capitals but looks rather messy and unorganised the way it has been written. it jumps forward to a close up of the title and then zooms out again to a long shot of the title. After this we see the hands open a book, this adds a thrill to the audience as they want to see what is going to be in the book. We then see someone writing, we cannot make out what they are writing which created suspense for the audience. Then we see our first burst of colour on the screen, we get a red flash on the screen which gives connotations of danger and warning signs, giving a pre-conception of what is to come in the film. The music continues to dim and then increase in pitch whilst these actions take place. After this we see the character cutting up pictures, this adds a stalker idea as they could be cutting up pictures of someone they are stalking.
We then see a glimpse of a face on a picture, in the picture we are not sure whether this person is dead or alive and it is in black and white. This again adds suspense as we wonder what has happened to this person and what the character has to do with it. we can also see newspaper cuttings, it makes the audience wonder what has been in the news and whether the character has already committed a crime. In the next shots we can see the character highlighting out words in black, this makes the audience wonder what the words are and why they are being blacked out this therefore creates suspense and this film comes across as a thriller. We then see the eyes of a drawing of someone being blacked out, this could connote to the audience that there is going to be a murder or someone will die due to the character. There are then multiple shots of different things the character is doing like cutting up photos and threading needles etc.
Overall the film opening is very jumpy and hard to understand but this therefore creates suspense and mystery to the film. The use of dim lighting also makes is spooky and mysterious setting to the film opening and the use of props gives the idea of stalker or murderer which gives a preconception to what the film is going to be based on.
